I played Squad briefly. It’s one of the few games I ever asked Steam for a refund. Slow, clunky, physics were almost non-existent, poor sound…it was like playing a half-finished BF3 mod. Plus I gave a personal bone to pick with the creators, IIRC they’re the Project Reality modders ftom BF. No desire to support them.
It doesn’t have the budget of Battlefield/EA, so obviously it’s not going to be as pretty or sound as good. That’s a silly expectation, and if that’s what you want from games then fine, stick with AAA only.
When did you play though? Vehicle physics have been overhauled and are significantly better. It’s still not perfect, as there is no such thing as perfect in game development, but it’s pretty good now.
Yes, the studio spawned from Project Reality, though to say they’re the same thing now is not really the case. That was many years ago, and the studio has changed a lot since. Why would that be an issue anyway?
If you’re interested in this style of game though, Bellum is being worked on and it seems to be setting itself up to be good. It’s currently only infantry, and it’s significantly more teamwork oriented. No arcadey one-man-army stuff.
It would have been 3 years ago or so at least for the game.
And my reasons are valid enough. The PR team threatened lawsuits against multiple modding communities back in the day. I have no reason to support people like that.
Ok, yeah. There has been a big overhaul since then. They upgraded to UE5 from UE4 (carefully, so performance wasn’t lost, and some people gained performance). There’s a new global illumination system (not Lumen) that makes things look significantly better. Vehicles physics were also totally redone, so they behave a lot better and more like you’d expect, rather than getting stuck on every rock or small barrier.
I don’t know anything about that. Did they become a part of Offworld Industries when they formed the studio? The studio is very mod-friendly, so that doesn’t sound like them. You can choose to support whoever you wish, but they’re undoubtedly a better company than EA, so if you’re still supporting them then I don’t see how you could hold the same standards and be against OWI. If you give EA a pass, for whatever reason, then you don’t really have standards. You don’t have to support anyone, but at least try to have a consistent reason for it.
EA gets a pass because they didn’t try to sue my community. This was pre OWI, they weren’t even a “studio”, just a bunch of modders trying to force their will on a community over assets they didn’t hold IP rights to. They didn’t have a leg to stand on, but nonethelss they tried and it cost people effort and money to verify this. I’m sure you can understand not wanting to support gamers suing other gamers.
Have you even checked if the same people were part of OWI, or still are? It evolved from Project Reality. It isn’t the same thing.
Also, EA was known to be one of the worst companies in America for good reason. They use their money and power to stop competition. They definitely sue to “protect their IP” and they also purchase small studios trying to compete with them, so they can’t. Again, you need to reflect on if you actually hold these views. If you do, EA should be boycotted. I’ve been avoiding their games for probably near a decade now, because they’re a scummy company. OWI doesn’t compare to them. Stop giving them money if you actually have issues with this behavior. You clearly are just giving them a pass because you don’t care.
The OWI boycott isn’t actually a moral boycott because you don’t stand by those morals. You are allowed to just not like the game instead of acting righteous while also still supporting a pretty consistently immoral company. I can understand why you wouldn’t support them, but not if you also support EA. You can’t really do both of these reasonably.
